In this article we present the results of a research on the returns of the subsidies by NWO (the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) for doctoral research in the Netherlands. Remarkably enough, empirical studies on this issue haven’t been conducted until now, even though there can be important financial consequences in case of failures. In this study the returns of doctoral research’ grants for the social sciences are presented. The subsidy return is on average 83%. The qualitative analyses of the files shows differences between types of programmes and between the disciplines. Moreover, personal files of the recipients of the subsidy whose Ph D trajectories were delayed or aborted were analyzed. We report on completion rates and causes for delay or abortion of Ph D projects.Text of article
